From Rotterdam into Europe, the METRANS Group operates weekly many intermodal rail connections throughout the continent. Originally founded in the Czech Republic, METRANS has been steadily building an impressive intermodal rail network since the 1990s. Its mission: to connect the ports of Europe with the European hinterland. With a fleet of approximately 140 locomotives and over 4,000 wagons, METRANS has become one of the market leaders in intermodal transport.

Intermodal shuttle trains from Waalhaven

Recently METRANS took another step and founded METRANS Netherlands B.V. , which started its activities in October 2024 in Rotterdam. The METRANS Rail Netherlands office is strategically located next to the Waalhaven shunting yard in Rotterdam, where the team plays a key role in managing train movements in and out of the port.

Collaboration with Czech Republic

Gerben Kooman, Managing Director, is one of the people leading the Dutch company. Backed by a strong organization at the Czech headquarters, he and his team are focused on the Dutch part of the rail activities within METRANS. The team has daily contact with the colleagues work closely together in the head office in Czech Republic, despite the distance. This requires a trustworthy connection, as the processes require a quick follow-up, without delays, to keep the trains running.

All support came from our headquarters in the Czech Republic. It is nice to now have a local IT partner supporting our colleagues from the Czech Republic.

Building the right team

“You need the right people for that,” says Gerben Kooman. “In addition to train drivers, we have also built a strong office team with for instance process controllers. To ensure smooth operations on the IT side, we reached out to Agerion IT some time ago.”

A local IT business partner

"Our IT support is based in the Czech Republic, which means that almost all support was done remotely. We noticed that this was not optimal and needed local support for various IT processes. Agerion IT turned out to be the right partner and has already supported us in tuning our software, preparing workstations or installing hardware, updating the network in our office, as well as providing us with ad hoc support for various other IT issues. The cooperation started not so long ago, which means that we are still finding our way in what is the best line of cooperation and communication, but we can already say that the cooperation is going well and that Agerion will also be involved in future developments within our company."

NIS2

For example, Agerion IT was asked to participate in the developments within METRANS in the area of the NIS2 legislation. This European legislation, intended to strengthen the digital resilience of organizations in vital sectors, obliges organizations to take appropriate security measures and introduces a duty to report serious cyber incidents. All necessary steps to continue working on a secure future within METRANS and METRANS Rail Netherlands.

The future of METRANS

"We continue to work on the development of intermodal rail freight transport and in doing so we want to ensure a
green future. “
