Microsoft stops with Windows 10: time for action

Agerion Microsoft Windows 11 update EOL Windows 10

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will permanently discontinue support for Windows 10. This means that from that date onwards, no security updates, bug fixes, or technical support will be available for this version of the operating system. For organizations still working with Windows 10, it is important to determine in good time what steps are necessary to continue operating securely and future-proof.

What changes exactly?

After the end date, Windows 10 will remain technically usable, but without updates, the system will become vulnerable to security risks. This applies to all regular editions, including Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education. From October 2025, Microsoft will only offer paid security updates through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The costs for this start at around €30 per device per year rising to €90 per device in the third year (2027–2028). This is only available for three years.

What are the alternatives?

The most obvious step is to switch to Windows 11. This version is actively supported and offers improved security and performance. However, for organizations with older hardware, it is not a given that an upgrade will be possible. Microsoft has tightened the system requirements for Windows 11. Devices must have a TPM 2.0 chip, a UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot, and a 64-bit processor with at least two cores, among other things.

Want to check if your PC is compatible?

  1. Download the tool from the official website:
    https://www.microsoft.com/nl-nl/windows/windows-11#pchealthcheck
  2. Install and open PC Health Check.
  3. Click on the “Check if your PC is eligible” button.
  4. The tool will immediately indicate whether your system is compatible, with a brief explanation.

If your system does not meet the requirements, you can click on “More information” for details (e.g., TPM missing, processor too old, etc.).

We can always make a suitable plan for this transition.

Minimum system requirements Windows 11

  • Processor: 1 GHz or faster, 2 cores, 64-bit, 8th generation Intel or 2nd generation AMD Ryzen or newer
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Opslag: 64 GB or more
  • TPM: Version 2.0 required
  • Screen: Minimum 9 inch, 720p
  • Graphic card: DirectX 12-compatible with WDDM 2.0
  • UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot
  • Internet connection and Microsoft-account for installation of Home/Pro

What if you hardware is not compatible?

For systems that don't meet the requirements, there are three options:

  1. Invest in new hardware,
  2. Switch to a cloud solution like Windows 365,
  3. Temporarily use the ESU program,

Windows 365 offers the option to run Windows 11 in the cloud, even on older devices. This can be interesting for organizations seeking flexibility or that are not yet ready to invest in new workstations.

Why take action now?

Although October 2025 may seem a long way off, it is wise to start taking stock now of which systems within your organization will be affected. This prevents time pressure, unnecessary costs, and security risks when support actually ends. Moreover, migrations and hardware replacements can take time, especially if you rely on specific software or infrastructure.
